Things are not going well for league contenders Liverpool and Arsenal as both teams lost their EPL GW 33 games, essentially losing the top spot and leadership of the Premier League Table. Here’s more.
A Not-So-Klopp Goodbye
Liverpool had been performing quite well in the league table for the past few weeks until their lead was upended by their unfortunate 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace yesterday. It has often been the case that Liverpool perform so well only to flail in the last few weeks of the Premier League season – an unfortunate occurrence as the team is under pressure to give their manager Jurgen Klopp a fitting goodbye.
Oh Eze, For Palace
Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze put the away team ahead in the 14th minute, essentially bagging a monumental win against Liverpool at their home and denying ‘The Reds’ a crucial three points in their gunning for EPL Supremacy.
Liverpool did play well, I must say, but they just weren’t expecting Palace to play as well as they did. The result – a flop in stature and losing out on EPL Table leadership. Liverpool are now relegated to third in the EPL Table, only two points behind current top spot, Man City.
If Arsenal were Actually Real ‘Gunners’..
On their part, Arsenal were also put to shock as they lost out 2-0 to Aston Villa yesterday. Villa’s Leon Bailey opened the scoring for the away team in the 84th minute, with Ollie Watkins topping up his efforts with their second three minutes later.
Arsenal have, time and again, shown their lack of actual ‘gunning’ spirit and quite ironically, a lack of skillful arsenal in their ranks.
Arsenal’s League Title Hopes Gone
The result is that now Arsenal lose out of the EPL’s top leadership, settling for second place with 71 points, just two points behind league leaders and defending champions Manchester City.
Will Arsenal upend Man City’s lead?
If last season is anything to go by, Arsenal have just narrowly lost a chance to win the EPL Title for a second season in a row thanks to floundering in the last gameweeks. Share your thoughts below.
Other EPL GW 33 Results
The Way-Laid: Man United Draw Bournemouth
In other EPL GW 33 results, Manchester United drew 2-2 with Bournemouth, a disappointing but not utterly poor performance. Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke put in their first goal in the 16th minute with Justin Kluivert making it two in the 36th minute.
Bruno Fernandes Brace
Bruno Fernandes, on the other hand, came to the rescue of United and scored a brace, putting in his first in the 31st minute and topping it up with a penalty conversion in the 65th minute.
Despite not having hopes for the top four of the Premier League this season, Manchester United have had numerous chances to make their impact. The team now sits at seventh in league standings with 50 points – 23 points behind top club City, unscalable distance with only six games remaining for them.
Newcastle Hammer Tottenham as Man City Snatch EPL Table Lead
Elsewhere, Newcastle hammered Tottenham 4-0, a stark reminder that no team is unbeatable; as Man City clobbered Luton Town 5-1 to snatch the top spot in Premier League standings. City were gifted their first thanks to a Daiki Hashioka own goal in the 2nd minute. The rest were from Mateo Kovacic who scored in the 64th minute, Erling Haaland who converted a penalty in the 76th minute, Jeremy Doku who scored in the 87th minute, and Josko Gvardiol who capped City’s lead with their fifth in 90 + 3′.
Will Manchester City Win EPL 2023/24?
City are now the league leaders and, in my view, the expected Premier League champions this season. Yes, they may only be two points ahead of the competition but if history is anything to go by, Manchester City will win the EPL 23/24.
In other matches played, Brentford beat Sheffield United 2-0, Nottingham Forest drew Wolves 2-2, Burnley drew Brighton 1-1, and Fulham beat West Ham 2-0. Chelsea will go head-to-head with Everton tonight in the last of EPL GW 33 matches. Stay Tuned.
