Gen Zs in Kenya have called for the #NaneNane protests, “the mother of all protests” on August 8, terming the protests the #NaneNaneMarch. The protests come after a little over a month of heated Gen Z protests in Kenya that led to the loss of over 60 Gen Z lives with over 66 protestors abducted, and hundreds more injured. In this post we report on the #NaneNane protests and #NaneNaneMarch as Part 5 of the Kenya Protests Live Megathread: Gen Z #NaneNane Protests #NaneNaneMarch.

August 13, 2024: KeNHA Proposes Toll Fee for Major Roads
The Kenya National Highways Authority, KeNHA has recognized the existence of a proposal to charge toll fees for major roads in the country. The list of roads include the Thika Superhighway, which KeNHA says that motorists should be charged to use similar to the Nairobi Expressway.

Jimi Wanjigi’s Injects in Citizen TV Interview: “The Explainer”
Pact with Ruto and Kenyatta
In an interview on Citizen TV’s “The Explainer,” Jimi Wanjigi, Safina party leader and presidential aspirant, reflects on his past interactions with William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta during the Kibaki administration. Wanjigi recounts how in 2009, Ruto and Kenyatta approached him for help in addressing the International Criminal Court (ICC) PEV cases that threatened their futures. He says he supported their rise to power in 2013, believing it was a chance to create a new constitutional order and empower a new generation.
“I sold the unity of the country, a new generation in power, and a cause for growth to the people,” Wanjigi states, denying that he funded their campaign financially but acknowledging his role in their electoral success.
Breakdown of the Political Pact
Wanjigi explains his current opposition to William Ruto, stemming from the breakdown of their political pact shortly after the ‘UhuRuto’ administration began. Wanjigi says he feels betrayed by Ruto’s actions, particularly regarding the handling of public funds and constitutional matters.
Jimi Wanjigi: In Uhuru’s government, we never talked after he came for me. I was even put in an obituary, I am alive but I was in an obituary. When you are put in an obituary in Palestine, that is what is called a death promise. We said at the time they wanted to kill us. Why?… pic.twitter.com/bWo6ROC0ds

Jimi Wanjigi: The last time when we had such an incident in 2017, the police came and asked for me, we said what for. This time they surrounded the home by 5:30 and by 7 without a court order, they broke into the home and terrorized my family. What happened that night until 4am… pic.twitter.com/VGnT98SYiw

Wanjigi says that he, Uhuru, and Ruto had agreed that if he helps them rise to power and avoid ICC, they would, in turn, help the country.
“I have kept the details of this incident private out of respect for a promise I made,” Wanjigi notes, but says he now speaks out due to being targeted by Ruto and his allies.
Jimi Wanjigi: It was a promise I made to them that I’d never make it public unless need be. They didn’t even trust themselves with the original. I will never break that promise. I have been talking about it for the longest time. Both of them know me very well. Maybe they believe… pic.twitter.com/qU3IYf5Aan

Support for Protests and Personal Repercussions
Wanjigi reiterated his support for the Gen Z protests, viewing them as a democratic right for Kenyans in financial “pain”. He revealed that his involvement is what led to a siege on his home by police, where his property was destroyed, and his family assaulted. Wanjigi says that he funded Gen Zs to buy water, flags, and things like that.
“This incident crossed the line from a public dispute to a personal attack,” he asserts.
Jimi Wanjigi: I support the Gen Z and what they are doing. Kenyans are in pain. I have supported them financially. I gave them money when they were in bond. I have supported the supply of flags and water. I am sure I am not the only Kenyan who did it #CitizenExplainer… pic.twitter.com/HrFDmOoV1G

Legal Issues and Call for Ruto’s Resignation
Wanjigi discusses his ongoing legal battles with William Ruto, who has accused him of possessing tear gas canisters. The canisters, he says, have been reclassified as “grenades” by government prosecutors in court. Wanjigi goes on to challenge Ruto’s ability to solve the country’s problems and suggests that Ruto should resign.
Jimi Wanjigi: President Ruto has invited people into his sinking ship so that the masses do not have a voice. Kenyans will not join them. We were already united in economic pain#CitizenExplainer@YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/8D2ylPqTIM

“Ruto is unable to solve the problems he has created in Kenya and should resign, along with his government,” Wanjigi argues.
Jimi Wanjigi: Ruto must go is a clarion call even in my heart. He must go. William Ruto cannot solve problems that he has helped create. God will never even bless him with that. Redefining Article One of the Constitution
Wanjigi also proposes that the people of Kenya redefine Article One of the constitution to remove Ruto from the presidency. He believes that the people hold the ultimate power and can create new governance models if necessary.
Jimi Wanjigi: It is my prayer that people see that even when you are president, you can be brought down by the people. You are accountable to the people; you must rule with the ballot#CitizenExplainer@YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/59epmoh9Ay
— Citizen TV Kenya (@citizentvkenya) August 13, 2024
He cited the 2008 accord signed to introduce the position of Prime Minister in the constitution, in pursuit of peace and the formation of a coalition government.
Jimi Wanjigi: Maybe he (Raila) has not understood the gravity of the problem and how deep Ruto’s ship has sunk. Let’s wait and see how long they will last when they are there because they may jump out. I would not be as confident as Ruto is about uniting the country… pic.twitter.com/iHDOkPHg02
— Citizen TV Kenya (@citizentvkenya) August 13, 2024
“The people are not restricted by the constitution and have the power to create new governance models,” he emphasizes.
Wanjigi also warned the new Treasury CS against stamping odious debt.
Jimi Wanjigi: If John Mbadi signs the gazette notice and accepts odious debt, he has fallen into the trap. If I were him, I’d be very careful what the treasury officials ask him to sign #CitizenExplainer@YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/QMopS7QgWU

Desire for a Peaceful Transition
Wanjigi concludes by expressing his desire for a peaceful transition, saying Ruto must go due to his regime’s failures and the resulting economic collapse of the country. He also hints at discussing the need for an accountable government and the economic issues facing the country in a future interview.
Jimi Wanjigi: I want William Ruto gone like yesterday. This regime has failed, will fail and is going to hurt more and more Kenyans as we go on every single day. Gen Zs Express Concern that Kenya Could Default on Its International Debt and Trigger Hyperinflation
Gen Zs on X have expressed concern that Kenya could default on its international debt and trigger hyperinflation. According to the Gen Zs, most of Kenya’s international debt is odious and was not utilized for the purposes for which it was borrowed, ending up in the pockets of corrupt government officials.

Consequently, there would be even more protests, according to one X user, and this would cause a deepening of the current political crisis in the country.

The Process to Recall MPs Now Open
Gen Z also expressed joy as it is now legally possible to recall members of parliament following the onset of the process of nominating IEBC commissioners the attainment of 2 years since they got into the various seats. IEBC, the country’s election body has been without commissioners for a while and the law requires that it be reconstituted before any electoral process, including recalling MPs, can be executed. An MP also has to have spent two years in the post before they can be recalled.

What Happened During the Police Raid on Jimi Wanjigi’s Home?
When a heavy contingent of police officers, a multi-agency team, raided Safina party leader, Jimi Wanjigi’s home, they were out to arrest him. They accused him of funding the Gen Z protests in Kenya and had followed him home. The officers stuck around for the better part of yesterday evening, eventually breaking down his door and entering the home forcefully.

A squad of special operations officers went in with their rifles, only to find Wanjigi’s son and daughter, his wife, and his mother with no trace of him. The family members present say that the officers harassed and assaulted them, with the intent of finding Wanjigi. His son says that 5 police officers “beat him up”, assaulted his sister and mother telling them to “lie down and kicked their heads”, and even went on to cause a lot of damage to the house. The daughter, in turn, says that she and her mother were assaulted too, with the police intending to rid them of their phones as they had taken them out and started recording. Watch more on what they said, courtesy of Citizen TV.
Wanjigi’s lawyer, Willis Otieno says that they went along with the officers to search the entire house. He says that the officers took “iPhones… [and] iPads belonging to the family members, walkie-talkies for house communication, and a receipt for buying fuel at a TotalEnergies [petrol] station”. Otieno says that those items “were inventorized… and we all wrote that down and signed” and that is all the officers took as “evidence”. The lawyer says it was then that everybody left, only for a “second team” to arrive in the morning.
“Second Team” of “Armed Robbers”
According to Willis, the “second team” took everyone from their rooms and went on to steal valuables including watches, jewelry, and cash from the house. Even more, they searched the cars in the compound, including his where documents and cash were also stolen. The lawyer says that it was an “armed robbery” and the rogue officers had also cut electricity and internet connectivity to the house to cover up their act.
Wanjigi Resurfaces and Denies Claims That He Funded Gen Z Protests
On resurfacing today, Jimi Wanjigi explained that the police officers raided his house twice, once during the night of August 8 (yesterday) and the second time early in the morning of today (August 9) at 6 AM. Wanjigi, who’d sought conservatory orders to prevent his arrest, said that the government had come looking for him during the previous regime, and they couldn’t find him. He said that the police can come to his house but they will not find him and would be wasting their time.
Wanjigi denied accusations that he was funding the Gen Z protests and said that if there was a channel, he would fund them and ensure they have the essentials they need during protests such as toothpaste, masks, etc. Protestors use toothpaste to wade off the effects of teargas. ODM party leader, Raila Odinga and NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua visited the family and condemned the regime’s raid. The police units were still camping at the residence today.

Are Gen Z Protestors Suffering from Stockholm Syndrome?
Yesterday’s turnout for the Nane Nane protests was low, as most Gen Zs opted to stay home, perhaps fearing for their safety. Others have shifted sides and called for an end to the protests, prompting questions of whether the Gen Z protestors are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. We look into that question in the post below and uncover the emotional toll of fear and repression in the Gen Z protests.

Police Barbarity as Police Officers Openly Attack Journalists During the #NaneNaneMarch
In ugly scenes witnessed in the #NaneNane protests, barbaric police officers attacked journalists, clobbering them with wooden sticks and even throwing teargas at them. One such instance was CNN’s Larry Madowo who was targeted by the barbaric police officers twice. The officers threw teargas canisters toward Larry and his crew, with fragments of the canisters hitting him on the face. Larry is okay.

Safina Party Leader Jimi Wanjigi’s House Raided
Businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi’s home in Muthaiga was today raided by police, following a car chase that ended at his home. The Safina party leader had been in town to take part in the Gen Z protests when anti-riot police teargassed his vehicle, prompting him to get in and speed off. The police then chased the two-vehicle motorcade until they reached his home where Wanjigi, in the first car, managed to enter his compound and lock the gate. The second vehicle was left abandoned outside the gate.

United States Warns Ruto’s Government Against Protestor Killings, Calling for Accountability for Police Officers Accused of Killing Protestors
The United States Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya delivered an in-person warning to President William Ruto that the police should defend human lives and not be the ones taking them. The Under Secretary also called for police accountability and the prosecution of police officers involved in the killings of protestors during the Gen Z protests.

Uzra Zeya also challenged Ruto to take concrete action on his pledges to “strengthen rule of law, champion anti-corruption initiatives, and advance accountability within his own government“. Uzra also added that “the key question is the implementation of these commitments into action“. She also said that one area of focus is “the importance of investigating reports of security force abuses, prosecuting those found to be responsible, and ensuring that accountability is achieved“.

Karua questioned how a CS like Kithure Kindiki’s wealth could have grown by “astronomical sums” of 150 million Kenya shillings since he became the CS Interior in 2022.
Martha Karua: The vetting was really a circus, not what people expected. Kenyans don’t expect people to just routinely be asked how much they are worth, they are not questioned about their sources of wealth. For Kindiki, you would expect probing questions about the conduct of the… pic.twitter.com/ljL2iwE34e
— Citizen TV Kenya (@citizentvkenya) August 6, 2024
Karua said that an actual vetting would have included the nominees being questioned on their source of wealth and not just asked to say their net worth. A nominee like Hassan Joho said his net worth was a whopping 2.36 billion Kenya shillings.
Martha Karua: We expect probing questions, not a sweetheart deal. Basically, each one of those nominees was given a sweetheart deal, no probing questions. Kenyans had sent very many questions. I think the real vetting has been done by Gen Z online and a majority if not all of… pic.twitter.com/nah6ZinHGB

Karua: President Ruto’s “Mandate Withdrawn” by the People and Parliament “Compromised”
Martha Karua went on to say that President Ruto’s mandate had been “withdrawn by the people directly” and that parliament was “compromised”.
Martha Karua: Whereas the Gen Z have been asking for transparency and accountability, these appointments have lowered the bar because they seek to violate the design of the Constitution, they also seek to lower the bar on accountability. Karua reiterated that the people through the Gen Z protests, had taken away President Ruto’s mandate to serve as the president of the country and that he should “resign”.
Martha Karua: Perhaps Ruto and Gachagua should heed the call of the Gen Z, let them exit, give the country an occasion to go to elections and get other leaders. We have differed on principle with Raila Odinga, but there is no animosity between us. We remain friends as one would… pic.twitter.com/u1QUZ9Ia0l

She also went on to say that parliament is a “compromised institution” as seen in the sham vetting they undertook for CSs.
Martha Karua: Narc-K gave notice to withdraw from Azimio which matures in 3 months but in the meantime, we will not participate in anything to do with Azimio. We do not want to support what we believe in untenable#CitizenExplainer@YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/YNqkrmZudd
— Citizen TV Kenya (@citizentvkenya) August 6, 2024
Karua also explained that she left Azimio after differences with Raila on his decision to join Ruto’s “broad-based government”.
Martha Karua: Raila is one person who worked hard to get the 2010 Constitution. We have worked together but there are times when we have not walked exactly the same path, it’s only he who can explain why at this time he will allow himself and his party to lower the bar on… pic.twitter.com/4q7x2WvXy2

Martha Karua: It is not illegal to enter government but through the front door by forming a coalition, not the back door. But to have one leg in government and the other in opposition is basically blocking and watering down accountability #CitizenExplainer@YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/C1htovkiaA
— Citizen TV Kenya (@citizentvkenya) August 6, 2024
Karua said that Raila is very keen on getting the AU Chair job and that he needs the government’s support since for one to be elected, one has to be proposed by their country’s government.
Martha Karua: Raila sort of withdrew to campaign for the AU seat for which he needs government backing. He has to be proposed by the government of Kenya and I think this is where the trap fell #CitizenExplainer @YvonneOkwara pic.twitter.com/vEMar42q9E

Karua also said that she wouldn’t work for Ruto even if he called her to join his government, which she clarified he hadn’t.
Martha Karua: I wouldn’t work for William Ruto. Whatever changes and whatever quality of people he gets, he is the minister for everything. I know Raila is easy to work with, you can differ but you can sit across the table and discuss it. There is no way I would accept to work… pic.twitter.com/tuJsg4sFl0

August 5, 2024: Raila: Ruto Came to Me Begging Asking for My Help to Save His Government
ODM Leader Raila Odinga today revealed that President Ruto went to him begging for his help to save Ruto’s regime following heated Gen Z protests. Gachagua Speaks: VP Breaks Silence on Reported Impeachment Ploy Against Him
VP Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence on recent reports that there is a ploy to have him impeached. On Sunday, the VP spoke to vernacular stations and said that he has no problem if there is an impeachment motion against him. Gachagua said that some MPs were behind the planned ouster, and had started the ploy a while back. He said that they didn’t feel they had the numbers back then but now since Raila has joined Ruto, they feel they have enough numbers in parliament to oust him.

Gachagua said that he was not elected by MPs and only the people can sack him. He also said that he had not heard anything about an impeachment from President Ruto. The VP was adamant that he will not resign and that Ruto did not tell him that he had brought Raila to oust him. Gachagua also said that there had been an assassination attempt on one of his staff members, in an attempt to silence them.
Gachagua ‘Untraps’ State House to Welcome Odinga into Government
Gachagua also said that he had unset the previous ‘traps’ he had said he set for Raila at State House, saying that since Raila now supports his ‘one man, one shilling’ agenda, he is okay with him being in government. On Cleophas Malala being kicked out as UDA Sec-Gen, Gachagua criticized the manner in which it was done and said that he did not know it was happening at that time.
The Gen Zs’ take on the VP’s woes is that they are “not sympathizing” with him. They say that he should carry his own cross and if impeached, he should go back to his hometown and find something else to do.
Kenya Aviation Workers Union Calls for the Resignation of KAA’s Management Over Proposed Adani Deal
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union, KAWU resolved in their meeting Saturday that they are officially opposed to the proposed JKIA leasing plan to Adani Airport Holdings Limited. The union through its secretary general Moses Ndiema, questioned why the Kenya Airport Authority would need a foreign investor to mend roof leaks, paint the walls, or even “fix the toilets”. KAWU proposes a government-to-government plan instead, over the proposed public-private partnership, PPP.

In its meeting, KAWU resolved to call for the resignation of KAA’s management i.e., the board and the managing director of KAA over what they called “incompetence”. The union gave KAA’s management 7 days to resign, failure to which they said they would be taking industrial action and forfeiting their duties at the airport. A KAWU strike would effectively halt operations at East Africa’s biggest airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA.
The union also expressed concerns over proposed levy hikes as part of the Adani deal, saying it would lead to the loss of as many as 20,000 jobs. Ndiema says the government is pushing for the Adani deal as it “provides a convenient avenue” for “power brokers to dip their hands in the pot”. He also said that “it is a polite way of pushing out the business community currently at JKIA”.

According to Kevin’s mother, they had rushed to Toi Market when they received distress calls from fellow traders. On arriving, Kevin and Janet proceeded to help save what they could from the stalls while the mother remained behind to help try and call Nairobi County fire engines. Kevin’s mom says that it took the fire brigade 3 hours to arrive at the scene and when only one fire engine came, it was only half full. She later received reports that Kevin and Janet were missing, before they found the two burnt beyond recognition.
Kevin’s younger sister now says her hopes of going to college have been quashed, as she was depending on Kevin to get her through college. Our heartfelt condolences to the family.
Scourge of Fires in Nairobi Markets: Could it be Arson?
It has become the norm that markets in Nairobi will go up in flames, in unexplained circumstances, often to the detriment of traders and their businesses. There have been reports that most of these fires are due to arson, with land grabbers wanting to have the market traders evacuate the locations.
Nairobi County officials have failed the people time and again, with the latest being the failure of the fire brigade’s timely arrival to extinguish the Toi Market fire. The traders in Toi, most of who had taken out loans to finance their businesses, are now left desolate with no one to turn to. Governor Sakaja was yesterday pelted with stones after he visited the market. Traders were very angry with him as he’s failed to protect them from perennial fires.
