Her story captivated Skims' Founding Partner, Entrepreneur, and Shark Emma Grede who sought to invest in the company. Initially, Emma wanted 12.5% of the company but after Margaret negotiated and aroused interest from the other sharks, settled for 8%.

The Story Behind Kahawa 1893
Margaret Nyamumbo grew up on her grandfather's farm where he grew coffee. She grew up with a love for coffee but noted a disconnect between the labor inputs of women in coffee growing and the benefits they got. In essence, since men were mostly the landowners, they got more compensation from coffee growing even as the women were the ones who did most of the actual work.

A Prioritization of the Welfare of Women Coffee Growers
The realization of the gender inequality in compensation and the reaping of benefits from coffee growing (that mostly disadvantaged women) pushed Margaret to start Kahawa 1893. Kahawa 1893's tipping system is structured such that customers can tip farmers via a QR code at the back of the coffee's packaging for the whole bean coffee.
