The Story Behind Kahawa 1893

Margaret Nyamumbo grew up on her grandfather's farm where he grew coffee. She grew up with a love for coffee but noted a disconnect between the labor inputs of women in coffee growing and the benefits they got. In essence, since men were mostly the landowners, they got more compensation from coffee growing even as the women were the ones who did most of the actual work.

A Prioritization of the Welfare of Women Coffee Growers

The realization of the gender inequality in compensation and the reaping of benefits from coffee growing (that mostly disadvantaged women) pushed Margaret to start Kahawa 1893. She started the business with women in mind and works exclusively with women coffee farmers in her native country Kenya and also in Africa.

The Business Structure of Kahawa 1893

Kahawa 1893's business structure is one whose input (the actual coffee) is sourced exclusively from women coffee farmers in Africa. Kahawa 1893 goes a step further and allows customers to directly tip farmers. This is powerful as beyond ensuring that women actually reap benefits from their coffee growing efforts, Kahawa 1893 also allows customers to take part in empowering the women and tip them.

How Kahawa 1893 Tips Women Coffee Farmers

Kahawa 1893's tipping system is structured such that customers can tip farmers via a QR code at the back of the coffee's packaging for the whole bean coffee. When customers scan the QR code on their phones, they are taken to a payments landing page where they can tip a desired amount. These funds are then wired back to the women coffee farmers from who the coffee came.

Is Kahawa 1893 Coffee Ground?

At the moment, Kahawa 1893 offers 'Whole Bean' coffee which means that you'll have to have a coffee grinder to enjoy a cup of the refreshing coffee. This shouldn't discourage you, however, as whole-bean coffee is touted as more flavorful than ground coffee.

πŸ’‘ Whole Bean Coffee is coffee that comes as roasted whole coffee beans that you'll need to grind yourself as part of the brewing process.
