How to Update Your KPLC Token Meter: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: First buy KPLC Tokens
To get the 2 codes needed to update your KPLC token meter, you need to buy KPLC Electricity Tokens. I would recommend you buy a Ksh. 100 token, via M-Pesa, and moments later you will likely get your Ksh. 100 worth of electricity tokens and TWO codes that you will use to update your KPLC Prepaid token meter.
Step 2: Receive Update Codes and Tokens
After purchasing your Ksh. 100 KPLC tokens, you will get three codes:
- Your Electricity Token
- KPLC Token Meter 'RESET' Code, and
- KPLC Token Meter 'UPDATE' Code.
These are the codes you will need to update the token meter. The codes will come in a single message and here is the order with which you should input them to your electricity token meter.
Step 3: Input the 2 Update Codes Received from KPLC
You now need to input the 20-digit token meter 'RESET' and 'UPDATE' codes you got earlier together with your tokens. Here's the order you will follow:
- Before you get started, enter the Ksh. 100 KPLC TOKEN you had bought. KPLC recommends that you also enter "all other tokens previously bought" before updating.
- Press 'ENTER' on your KPLC prepaid meter. The meter should receive the token as it usually does, and you can now proceed to update your token meter.
- Input (key in) the token meter 'RESET' code as the first code.
- Once you have entered the 'RESET' code, press the 'ENTER' button on your KPLC token meter as you would when entering tokens.
- Key in the token meter 'UPDATE' code as the second code.
- Repeat step II and press the 'ENTER' button.
That's it. You have updated your token meter! Nice work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kenya Power & Lighting Company, KPLC Confirm When I Update My Token Meter?
There is no actual confirmation from KPLC that your prepaid token meter has been updated but if you enter tokens afterward and it works—after you've followed the steps above correctly—then you have updated your KPLC token meter.
Will I Be Charged to Update my KPLC Prepaid Token Meter?
No, you will not be charged to update your KPLC Prepaid token meter. The process is completely free. You will, however, need to buy an electricity token and that's when you'll receive the 2 codes needed together with your tokens. Most people report Ksh. 100 tokens working okay for them.
Why Should I Update my KPLC Token Meter?
Your KPLC Prepaid Token Meter, like any other tech device needs periodical software updates to ensure it runs optimally. KPLC says that the process will be done via a code to "uniquely identify each prepaid meter token that is generated at the point of purchase".
The need for this update, I believe, is also to help the token meters interface better with a growing database—as more and more users are connected to the grid, increase reliability for the token buying process, and align to KPLC's own systems' software updates.
What Will Happen if I Don't Update My KPLC Token Meter?
The KPLC's 'Update Meter Yako' drive has been urging users to update their token meters to avoid interruptions to their utilities or even electricity blackouts. The drive has been on for some time now, so there's really no excuse. 'Yako' means yours in Swahili.
Your KPLC Prepaid Token Meter may stop working if you don't perform the update, probably requiring you to ask KPLC to manually update it for you.
Since you cannot buy a token meter and only KPLC issues them, then you'll have to book a meeting and probably pay a fee to have it updated manually, or to get an update code, or for the company to come and install a new one for you.
When is the KPLC 'Update Token Meter Yako' Deadline?
KPLC gave a deadline of Saturday, 31st August 2024 for all Prepaid users to update their electricity token meters. You can read more on the official KPLC Website.
Phew, so many KPLCs and meters in one post. Good day and kindly share, especially 'mashinani' to your relatives who may not be aware that they need to update their token meters by Saturday, 31st August 2024.
